Engineering Degrees Grow on STEM Plan Push

Engineers are the inventors of our society. They are the people who make and test the things we use everyday. Engineers use scientific knowledge and mathematics to solve problems creatively. There are many different types of engineers with civil, mechanical, electrical and software engineers just to name a few. Many of these specialized degrees are available through online college and may be growing in popularity thanks to a new national campaign.

President Obama launched a campaign last year called, "Educate to Innovate". The President says he will make it a national priority to help students in the US to lead the pack in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math). John Holdren, the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology, echoes this sentiment saying America needs a STEM workforce that can develop clean sources of energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and discover cures for cancer.

The President's STEM plan outlines three priorities: helping all students think critically in STEM subjects, improving math and science teaching, and expanding STEM education and career opportunities for underrepresented groups like women and minorities.

Online college is one way to expand STEM education opportunities. The convenience of online college makes higher education available to a broader population. Distance students use the Internet to view class lectures, complete assignments and take exams. These are available 24 hours a day, allowing the student to work at their own pace on their own time.

Bachelors degrees in all types of engineering are available through most online colleges. There are also programs for masters or doctorate degrees. Most engineers have bachelors degrees in their selected specialty. The level of education, the field of engineering and the experience all contribute to a workers salary. These qualifications lead to a broad range of yearly salaries for engineers between $37,000 and $120,000.

There are several ways to pay for your engineering education. The US government is the largest source of funding. The Department of Education will provide more than $116 billion this year to help millions of students and their families pay for college. There are federal grants, loans and work study programs available to all college students. Filling out a free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) will determine your financial need and how much aid you are qualified to get.

Colleges and universities offer scholarships specifically for engineering students, but students may also compete for scholarships offered by private organizations. For example the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation chooses 300 students from across the country each year. The students are awarded scholarships valued at $7,500. There are also groups that offer scholarships to minority students and women pursuing engineering degrees.
