The Popularity of Online Degrees in Engineering

Online Degrees in Engineering is one of the most popular degrees available online. Engineers have been using the Internet for educational purposes for quite some time now. Engineering programs are one of the innovative online courses.

Engineering Degrees Grow on STEM Plan Push

Engineers are the inventors of our society. They are the people who make and test the things we use everyday. Engineers use scientific knowledge and mathematics to solve problems creatively. There are many different types of engineers with civil, mechanical, electrical and software engineers just to name a few. Many of these specialized degrees are available through online college and may be growing in popularity thanks to a new national campaign.

President Obama launched a campaign last year called, "Educate to Innovate". The President says he will make it a national priority to help students in the US to lead the pack in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math). John Holdren, the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology, echoes this sentiment saying America needs a STEM workforce that can develop clean sources of energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and discover cures for cancer.

The President's STEM plan outlines three priorities: helping all students think critically in STEM subjects, improving math and science teaching, and expanding STEM education and career opportunities for underrepresented groups like women and minorities.

Online college is one way to expand STEM education opportunities. The convenience of online college makes higher education available to a broader population. Distance students use the Internet to view class lectures, complete assignments and take exams. These are available 24 hours a day, allowing the student to work at their own pace on their own time.

Bachelors degrees in all types of engineering are available through most online colleges. There are also programs for masters or doctorate degrees. Civil engineers earn on average about $43,000 per year. For electrical engineers, earnings are almost double that. The chemical, drugs and plastic industries seem to have the highest-paid engineers of all, with a median income of $85,000 for those over 35 years of age.
