Manage Your Projects With Management Engineers

Management engineering is a professional field that combines engineering knowledge with business knowledge and management experience. Management engineers provide the bridge between the technical world of engineering and the business world by providing good technical knowledge and effective problem solving skills, as well as supervisory management and project management skills. This is invaluable in many companies where project falter due to the inability to manage both technical and business aspects effectively.

In the real world, it is often difficult for strictly business oriented people to understand the language, technical aspects, and difficulties of engineering, and vice versa for technically oriented personnel. This can lead to frustration in communication, implementation issues, projects not completed on time and on budget, and a host of other problems. Management engineers are trained in both engineering and business, so they are able to use a wider variety of tools, solve complex problems, work in a team environment with many different types of people, and manage technical projects that might challenge someone not trained in both areas.

Statistics show that within a few years of graduation, many management engineers are working within the management ranks, rather than just a strictly technical job. Formal education in business - the areas of economics, statistics, budget and project management, and cost analysis, is often essential for bridging the technical versus business world and for success in the management field. Many engineering schools now offer a bachelor's degree in Engineering Management that provides graduates with a good technical engineering foundation, as well as a grasp of business concepts and tools. Many schools also offer graduate business degrees to engineers that want to augment their technical knowledge.

With their broad base of knowledge, management engineers are invaluable in the project management field, especially on projects that require engineering supervision and technical expertise. Since failed, late, or over budget projects are quite problematic in corporations, a person trained in both technical and business applications, as management engineers are, can help ensure a much higher rate of success, especially on the more complex engineering projects.

Many management engineers are available through consulting firms. These consultants often offer a wide range of expertise and experience that may not be available in a company where those skills are not developed or available. A consultant's experience and knowledge can often make the difference between project failure and success, and is often well worth the investment. Choose a consulting firm who has a great track record, and make sure to ask how many projects similar to yours have been completed in the past 2 years, on time, and on budget. References are a must. Make sure to research and compare consulting companies, so that you retain the very best for your business.

When it comes to engineering management and engineering projects, make sure you have good management engineers or a management engineer consultant on your team. Their ability to understand both technical and business aspects, and to provide an effective interface between the two, can greatly enhance the effectiveness of your team, and help ensure project success.

Project Management: The 3 Major Project Types

1. Civil engineering, construction, petrochemical, mining, and quarrying

Projects in this category are those which spring to mind most readily whenever industrial projects are mentioned. Once common feature is that the fulfillment phase must be conducted on a site that is exposed to the elements, and usually remote from the contractor's main office.

These projects incur special risks and problems of organization. They often require massive capital investment, and they deserve (but do not always get) rigorous management of progress, finance, and quality.

For very large industrial projects the funding and resources needed are often too great for one contractor to risk or even find. The organization and communications are therefore likely to be complicated by the participation of many different specialists and contractors, with the main players possibly acting together as a consortium or joint venture company.

2. Manufacturing projects

Manufacturing projects aim to produce a piece of equipment or machinery, ship, aircraft, land vehicle or some other item of specially designed hardware. The finished product might be purpose-built for a single customer, or the project could be generated and funded from within a company for the design and development of a new product intended for subsequent manufacture and sale in quantity.

Manufacturing projects are usually conducted in a factory or other home-based environment, where the company should be able to exercise on-the-spot management and provide an optimum environment.

Of course, these ideal conditions do not always apply. Some manufacturing projects can involve work away from the home base, for example in installation, commissioning and start-up, initial customer training and subsequent service and maintenance. More difficult is the case of a complex product (such as an aircraft) that is developed and manufactured by a consortium of companies, very possibly overlapping international borders, with all the consequent problems of risk, contractual difficulties, communication, coordination, and control.

3. Management projects

This class of projects proves the point that every company, whatever its size, can expect to need project management expertise at least once in its lifetime. These are the projects that arise when companies relocate their headquarters, develop and introduce a new computer system, launch a marketing campaign, prepare for a trade exhibition, produce feasibility or other study report, restructure the organization, mount a stage show, or generally engage in any operation that involves the management and coordination of activities to produce an end result that is not identifiable principally as an item of hardware or construction.

Although management projects might not result in a visible, tangible creation, much often depends on their successful outcome. There are well-known cases, for instance, where failure to implement a new computer system correctly has caused serious operational breakdown and has exposed the managers responsible to public discredit. Effective project management is at least as important for these projects as it is for the largest construction or manufacturing project.

I Hope You Aren't The Julius Caesar of Sales Management!

A little while ago, I waxed lyrical about learning from histories famous leaders and the leadership qualities that they stood for. Great leaders like Julius Caesar achieved almost impossible targets by fostering some remarkable talents of leadership and invoking faith, understanding and adoration from those he led. When I wrote the article "Are You the Julius Caesar of Sales Management", I wondered how many of you muttered "I hope not". For those, who weren't paying attention in their history class, Julius Caesar was a fantastic leader but was unfortunately betrayed and murdered by his peers. Not, might I add, one of the achievements that you should be emulating as a sales manager.

Sales and sales management, believe it or not, is not all about success and making sales. Sales is a competitive environment and leadership is an important part of your job, but what if you are really good at what you do? What happens if you are a real success? Then you have a real problem. You see, unfortunately there is something called 'human nature' that in a competitive environment brings out the worst in us all. If you are successful in an environment where you are measured against others in the same situation as you, you will undoubtedly foster jealousy, dislike and a determination to be beaten by those who are overshadowed by your success. Your overall bosses will love the energy that you bring and of course the success you bring to the business, but it is a fact of life that everyone else in your near vicinity will resent your success and secretly hope that you fail. So how do you deal with being a success?

One approach is to ignore everyone and concentrate on your own achievements and operate from your power base, namely everything directly in your control. Your achievements will speak for themselves and you will rise through hard work, ability and success. What does it matter if you provoke jealousy in other people? They aren't your problem. This is the Julius Caesar method of rising through the ranks of management. To be successful at this means being firm and resolute and can mean a lonely management environment with little support from colleagues. The trouble with this, is that you have to continuously succeed to maintain your achievements. Any sign of weakness or failure will be capitalized on by those who resent your perceived distance and superiority.

The other approach to dealing with success results in harmonious relationships with those around you. Competitive environments don't necessarily mean rivalry and hatred and what every business really wants is a successful all round business rather than individuals who act alone. In the wake of Julius Caesars death, his successor Augustus learned most from his predecessors mistakes by not only being a powerful and charismatic leader but by reaching out and involving his peers and political adversaries. Fostering relationships within an organisation and behaving as a team player is an asset that any business recognizes. If anything is prided above success it is the ability to make others succeed.

If you have talent and can succeed at anything you will be recognized for it. However, it is not always the best person at a job that succeeds in rising through the ranks of management and talent alone is not enough to keep you in a job. A business is like any political machine in that it works best when there is stability, cohesion and success in all areas of the business. Any one person who appears alienated from this machine will inevitably find it difficult to prosper.
